Beautiful Life ~ Futari de Ita Hibi (Beautiful Life ~ The Days The Two of Us Were Together) a tragic love story starring Kimura Takuya (one of the SMAP group members) and the very lovely Tokiwa Takako as his love interest. The series starts with Kimura riding his motorcycle. As he rides between two vehicles stopped at a red light, one of the driver (Tokiwa), sticks out her hand. Kimura frantically dodges her and almost crashes his bike. Annoyed, Kimura scolds her, but Tokiwa, simply ignores him and drives away. Thoroughly irritated, Kimura races after her. Soon, she drives into a library parking lot, and as she pulls into one of the slots, Kimura parks next to her. Seeing him, Tokiwa accuses him of following her to which he retorts, “I’m here to check out a book, nothing to do with you!” As he storms off, Tokiwa honks the car horn and calls him back. “Move your motorcycle, I can’t get out.” Although he feels she has plenty of space, he grudgingly does so. A moment later, as Tokiwa exits her car, Kimura is surprised that she needed the extra space to set up her wheelchair: She’s paralyzed from the waist down. Thus begin their passionate but tragic love affair. That the series outcome will be sad is never in doubt, the narration (served by both Tokiwa and Kimura) speak of Tokiwa character’s life in the PAST tense. The story then, is how the two characters fall in love and come to terms with her mortality.
In the beginning, the English captioning was very good - the translator was proficient in both Japanese and English and made an honest effort at presenting the intent and emotions of the dialogue. The captioning of the final two episodes, however, was inaccurate. Although the translation errors weren't fatal, that is, the emotional impact of the story was not affected, major nuances were COMPLETELY misplaced: For example, in one scene the caption states, “Thanks to you, she went peacefully.” The ACTUAL spoken dialogue however, was “Thanks to you, her final days were happy.” Viewers be warned: keep the tissues handy during the last episode.
One final note: This series was wildly popular when originally broadcast in Japan. It was the first drama series to average an audience share rating in the 30 percentile (32.3%); and the final episode had a record setting 41.3% audience share.
