BRIEF SUMMARY:
One day, a young man called Saionji Seiichi from Hitoyomura, a hamlet in the
mountains, visits Ueda Jiro’s office. The village has had a festival called
‘Chigiri Matsuri’ since the olden days. Legend has it that if a part of the body
of the partner that a person likes is wrapped in paper and bound with rope
fastened to a huge rock known as ‘Chigiri Iwa’, the person will succeed in love.
However, if it is only a one-sided wish, the person who is spurned will die
within three days. Seiichi has come to ask Ueda to prove that this legend is a
superstition.
Afraid of going alone, Ueda deceives Yamada
Naoko that “there is a 1 million yen lottery” and brings her with him to
Hitoyomura.
