BRIEF SUMMARY:  Yoko, a recent graduate who’s looking for work in early Showa era Tokyo. Her friend sets her up with an interview at Bungeishunju publishing company and she immediately catches the eye of Kan Kikuchi, eventually landing a job as his personal assistant. Kikuchi, played by character actor Toshiyuki Nishida, is a real historical figure who founded Bungeishunju and later went on to head Daiei Motion Picture Company. The story in the film, however, is completely fictional.

Having grown up in an area which more closely resembled Edo period Tokyo than her new modern surroundings, Yoko is fascinated by the fast lifestyle and pop culture she’s now being exposed to. Meanwhile, Kikuchi is growing old and all his money can’t buy him charm or good looks. When Korean-born playboy and author Hae-song Ma  comes into the picture he quickly catches the eye of Yoko, much to the chagrin of Kikuchi. As the two men butt heads, Yoko grows into a more independent woman with her own goals and ambitions of becoming an author starting to take shape.

劇 情﹕   紀念菊池寬誕辰120周年、逝世60周年的大型文藝作品。由西田敏行等實力派明星主演，改編自現任東京市副市長豬濑直樹的小說《心之王國》，圍繞日本文學界兩大獎項芥川獎與直木獎的創立人、被稱爲“時代的守護神”的日本著名作家菊池寬以及他所在的那個充滿著新事物的昭和初年展開故事。
　　

菊池寬由日本老牌演員西田敏出演，實力派女演員池肋千鶴則飾演菊池寬的私人秘書細川葉子，《愛與和平》裏的青年演員西島秀俊扮演的是一位朝鮮青年貴族。影片的導演是高橋伴明。影片的片名《越過山岡》原是一首歌的名字，它是日本歌謠之父古賀政男的代表作，誕生于昭和六年(1931年)。曲子根據一首曼陀林名曲改編，演唱者藤山一郎因此一炮走紅。這首歌被後世不斷翻唱，本片主題歌就是此歌的最新翻唱版本。影片並不是一部傳記片，內容也不完全忠實于曆史。
 

影片通過菊池寬的私人秘書細川葉子的角度展開，一方面敘述暸菊池寬成名後的歲月，同時也描繪暸一場二男一女的三角戀。葉子本是出身平民區的灰姑娘，因爲成爲菊池寬的秘書而進入暸另一個世界，變身爲身著洋裝的摩登女郎。她同時愛上暸功成名就的菊池寬和青年的朝鮮貴族馬海松，在兩個截然相反的男人之間搖擺不定
