Engine starring Kimura Takuya (a member of the SMAP singing group) as an obstinate, self-centered F1 formula auto racer. Although employed as a backup driver on an Italian racing team, his unreasonable pride and combativeness causes a wreck, damaging the team’s ace driver’s formula car. Kimura is fired from the team and is blacklisted worldwide. Unable to find employment on any F1 formula team in Europe or in Australia, Kimura returns to Japan to move in with his father while looking for employment. Upon reaching the home, Kimura is surprised to find that his father (Harada Yoshio) has started an orphanage. Kimura finds the place over-run with children who are overseen by an opinionated caretaker (Sakai Masato) and an attractive but inexperienced caretaker (Koyuki). As he struggles to find work as a F3 formula driver in Japan, he has to somehow fit in with the kids and the orphanage staff.
The English captioning was uneven: Some episodes had very good captioning, whereas in other episodes, the translations were not even close. Luckily, the story was easy to follow, and the plotting was obvious even with the inaccurate translations. The interactions between Kimura and the dozen children as he becomes their big brother was very enjoyable and moving.
