Toraiangu (Triangle) a murder mystery series with Eguchi Yousuke as the main character (villain?). As the series begins, a little boy looks down upon the corpse of a 10 year old girl. Her head lies in a pool of her own blood and the little boy’s hands are covered in blood. The little boy runs off. The scene jumps forward 15 years: the boy, now a grown man (Eguchi), is a surgeon and is operating on a patient. After surgery, as he removes his bloody surgical gloves, he looks at his watch as the time ticks down to midnight. It has been exactly 15 years since the little girl’s murder. In Japan, as the Statute of Limitation for murder is 15 years, the little girl’s murderer can no longer be lawfully punished. The scene jumps another 10 years: This time, Eguchi is a police detective (he has apparently given up medicine) and has worked for Interpol at their HQ in Paris, France. One year later, Eguchi has been assigned temporarily to the Western District Police HQ in Tokyo. He is partnered with Inagaki Goroh (one of the SMAP singers), an investigative detective with the Tokyo police department. Inagaki’s father, it turns out, was the lead investigator for the little girl’s murder 25 years ago. Since the murderer was never caught, Inagaki begins looking into the case. It’s not long before he suspects Eguchi as the murderer and that Eguchi has returned to Japan in order to destroy the case files.
The English captioning was uneven. Sometimes it was excellent: difficult and technical terminology were accurately translated; and then suddenly, common conversational terms were incorrectly captioned. Since this is a murder conspiracy mystery, with literally DOZENS of suspicious characters, accurate captioning was crucial in following the convoluted and overly complicated plot. The series had LOTS of misdirections, and flat out false leads, and the incorrect English captioning made keeping up with the storyline a real chore. Bottom line: it wasn’t bad, BUT it did get tiresome, and I was glad when the series ended.
