Boku to Kanojyo to Kanojyo no Ikiru Michi (Me and Her and Her Way to Live)
This is the second in the “Ikiru Michi” (Way to Live) series starring Kusanagi Tsuyoshi (of the SMAP boy band fame). Although there IS a romance story in the series involving the beautiful Koyuki as Kusanagi’s love interest, the story is focused primarily on the relationship between the father and his young daughter. The series begins with the wife suddenly demanding divorce from her cold, workaholic husband just as he is preparing to go to work. The husband is shocked and simply retorts, “We’ll discuss this tonight when I come home.” That evening when he returns however, the wife has already left, abandoning their young daughter. Thus starts the story of how a neglectful father learns to care for his daughter.
The English captioning was not very good. Since this was a drama series, accurate translation of the dialogue was important in following the storyline. The captions weren’t completely inaccurate, but it DID mistranslate a lot of the technical terms especially when the characters were discussing divorce, child custody and other legal matters.
All in all, the realistic portrayal of an overwhelmed father learning to cope with raising a child was very moving. Be sure to have the tissues handy.
