Bara no Nai Hanaya (Flower Shop Without Roses)
A family drama starring Katori Shingo (from the SMAP boy band) about a widower father raising his little girl while running a flower shop. One day, while opening up his shop, a beautiful blind woman (Takeuchi Yuoko) is taking cover from the pouring rain under his shop awning. He invites her into his store to dry off, and a romance begins. Later that first episode, it is reviewed that the blind woman isn’t blind at all, and that she was actually sent by her boss, an hospital director, in order to destroy the florist’s world. The director hates the florists and will go to any means to crush him. Each episode reviews a little more of the mystery between the florist and the hospital director and the blossoming relationship between the florist and “blind” girl. The story plot was a little TOO convoluted and frankly ridiculous, BUT, the relationships between father, daughter and adopted grandmother was very moving and quite satisfying. The sub-plot concerning child abuse and legal avenues for rescuing the abused children was VERY enlightening.
The English captioning was surprisingly good. Although one can quibble about the Japanese to English nuances that are lost, still, the effort the translator put into this project was obvious and very much appreciated by my wife and me. Bottom line, this series is worth watching and certainly some viewers may need to keep the tissue box handy (okay fine, maybe I sniffled, a little, only couple times).
