《世界奇妙物語》可以說是日劇史上一大奇跡、一大變革。日本四大民營電視臺之首的富士電視臺，1989年開始播出名為《發生的奇妙事》的短篇系列劇，次年正式定名為《世界奇妙物語》。多年來該劇始終貫徹由著名主持人田森說故事的形式，把一個個故事變成短篇劇集播放出來。該劇的特色是每年春秋季節播出，每次五個故事歷時兩小時，每個故事中間又會穿插很有意思的超短篇小故事。雖然時間短卻每個故事都短小精幹，令人回味無窮。
