1906年，陸軍為了國防需要，準備迅速完成日本地圖。陸軍參謀本部陸地測量部的測量員柴崎芳太郎，受命填補最後的空白點——登上劍岳頂峰進行測量。在險峻的劍岳面前，前人從未成功。此時，剛建立的日本山岳會從國外引進了最新登山裝備也打算向劍岳發起挑戰。陸軍下令不可輸給山岳會。
柴崎走訪了前任測量員古田盛作，再次了解到劍岳的可怕之處。古田把經驗豐富的登山嚮導宇治長次郎介紹給了他。帶著新婚妻子葉津世的祝福，柴崎與宇治來到富山進行前期踏看。有個神秘的僧人告訴他們：“背著雪登山，背著雪下山。”除此之外，柴崎沒有獲得任何登頂的訣竅就返回了東京。
1907
年，柴崎、宇治等一行七人背著沉重的測量用具正式出發攀登劍岳。登山之路完全出乎想象，峭壁懸崖、雪崩、暴風雨，一路艱難險阻不斷，而遙遙在望的頂峰卻總也到不了。柴崎十分焦慮，對宇治卓越的山岳感覺也產生了懷疑。隊員生田不慎失足墜落，所幸只是受了點輕傷。柴崎意識到，登上劍岳測量意味著要冒生命危險。
日本山岳會的小島鳥水等人也試圖登頂，他們和測量隊一樣陷入了困境。兩隊相遇後，小島說：“我們以登山本身為目的，而你們卻是為了工作。”
生田在立山溫泉完成治療後重新歸隊。大家各自收到了親友的來信，柴崎看著古田給他的鼓勵，再度振作精神，團結大家踏上征程……
柴崎一行能成功攀上頂峰完成測量的任務麼？
